Hiking
The Peace River valley is full of walking and hiking trails.

  • Begin a leisurely walk at the Normand Boucher Community Arboretum (located by the Peace Regional Pool) and follow the paved path along the dikes of the beautiful Peace River. Pass Kinsmen Park on your way, visit the statue of Twelve Foot Davis at Riverfront Park, and then cross the Heart River foot bridge to the Peace River Centennial Museum.
  • Hike along the Friendship Trail, which is a 29 km of trail between Peace River and Grimshaw, and is a part of the Trans Canada Trail. Begin at Shaftsebury Trail and follow the trail to Wilderness Park for an afternoon picnic.
  • Trek through Pat’s Creek, a 3 km wilderness interpretive trail above the creek, which used to be an old highway route in town. The creek’s name was lent by Pat Wesley, one of Peace River’s early pioneers, and it’s the source of many town of Peace River tales, from floods to slumpage, to a laden runaway tanker truck which scorched the upper portion of Main Street in 1962.
  • For a more strenuous hike, begin at the bottom of Misery Mountain and climb the many trails that lead to the top of the hill. The view will be worth your hard effort.
  • On your way back from visiting Twelve Foot Davis’s Gravesite on top of Grouard Hill, stop halfway down the hill and follow the trail that leads to Dr. William Greene’s Cairn! Greene was “an early bird aviator, prospector, dentist, and master magician” and built eighteen of the first airplanes built on this continent, ranking with the Wright brothers in aviation history. He settled in Peace River in 1922 and was an affluent man in the community until his death in 1956. In early July, be sure to watch for the abundant Saskatoon bushes in the hills.
  • Drive out to Queen Elizabeth Park, located 3 km North and 5 km West of Grimshaw off Highway 35, and spend the afternoon hiking around the lake and bird watching. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the sun on the sandy beach, and even round up players for a game of beach volleyball.
  • Drive past Alexander Mackenzie’s Cairn along Shaftsbury Trail and ride the ferry across to Tangent Park, where you can enjoy a number of different walking trails and areas to picnic and relax.

Friendly Trail Reminders- Keep all pets on a leash- Keep the trails clean- Remember Peace River Country is bear country, be bear safe!
